Is Google taking over?
March 16, 2008
I was just going through Google’s site and I came across some interesting stuff. Most notably I think their 411 service is very impressive. All these years I kind of always wondered what the point was to have such a thorough index of companies in their Google Maps system. If you ever noticed in Google Maps, you can search for places such as Pizza places and it will find you the closest one.
I think Google does a very good job at using their existing technologies to implement new ones. While Google 411 (1-800-GOOG-411) still has some bugs to work out (No canadian service, business listings only) I think it is a really intriguing concept. For the first time, Google has developed a service that doesn’t compete with traditional online companies. If they can perfect this, it will pose a major threat to telephone company directory assistance because it is free and it’s more intelligent than the 411 that we have today. Google’s service lets you find companies by category as well. In the future they could also integrate this with the GPS that is in cell phones already to make the service even better, but I doubt this will happen since privacy is a major issue here.
I think Google has already conquered the online world, not many people can deny that. I think that since they have done mostly everything there is to do online, they will move to more “offline” products and services. They already have the brand recognition, resources to develop new products and services and not to mention a team of the worlds best engineers at their disposal. I believe they are moving now towards Mobile technologies. One example is their Mobile Product search, which allows you to search products for sale on your cell. They are also developing their own open source mobile OS called Android, which I have previously made a post about .

This is a great find, Dave! I mean if Google does perfect this, we won’t have to ever worry about phonebooks anymore! I’d love for this service to work in Canada, it seems that everytime I go to use a phonebook, the number is out of order or the page I want has been tore out. What is up with that?!
It’s pretty funny once you think about it how Google is working backwards with their business model. Starting online and moving offline. It’s even funnier that it has worked so well for them. Who would have thought one of the world’s most well known companies would expand that way.

I completely agree.
Of course like many new ideas, there are always bugs to work out. And right now Google is obviously testing the waters by only having it available to the US.
I can see this idea really taking off and wouldn’t be surprised to see it available in Canada (or the rest of the world for that matter) in the near future. By starting an idea like this I wouldn’t be surprised to see many more companies, offer this type of service.
Telephone services will most likely be the first as they are already in the phone market, but other companies would probably start up because of this idea.

Wow……it’s a great innovation by Google and great way to save time. They again demonstrated that they are one step ahead than others and always innovative.

Hello folks! I’m with a new speech reco company called Dial Directions and we’re fans of the “free phone service” model too. In that spirit I hope you don’t mind me mentioning that we launched a new (free) phone service – It’s called DIRECTIONS and you just call it to get directions to any address in the U.S.!
All you do is:
1. Dial the word “DIRECTIONS” on your cell phone keypad (347-328-4667)
2. Say your starting address and destination
3. Receive directions instantly by text message
And we like the free lunch model too. It’s free (outside your carrier’s minutes or SMS charges). P.S. DIRECTIONS can also find the closest location (to you) of national chains like Starbucks or Fedex.

GOOG-411 launched in Canada sometime over the past few weeks. It’s now available here. Check it out.

When it comes to free directory assistance, you have LOTS of choices, including several that have been around since well before the Google version and several that have come around since. Try them all out and see which one(s) you prefer. You may want to try them all every so often just to see what’s new! Grin!
