About David Winer?

January 31, 2008

I found the post about David Winer to be interesting. It said that he is the father of RSS feeds and is a technologist and a hacker. So does that mean that hacking is always a bad thing? When I looked the term up on Dictionary.com, it says that hacking means “to alter a computer program”. Ok, so from that description I’m under the impression that he’s either refining or taking over ones computer. I could be totally wrong but that is simply the impression that I get from it.

From reading Wikipedia, Dave sounds like a very intelligent man. I wonder if he plays with websites like Innocentive or yet2.com? He has had very many accomplishments and seems to keep himself fairly busy. Anyway, I find him to be an interesting person and will more than likely begin to read his blog from here on in!

Kate, after poking around the web I did find out some information about Winer that may help explain the “hacker” bit. In this post (http://nytimesriver.com/help.html) Winer referred to himself as a “media hacker” which (apparently) is quite different from a typical hacker. Wikipedia defines it as, “the usage of various electronic media in an innovative or otherwise abnormal fashion for the purpose of conveying a message to an as large number of people as possible, primarily achieved via the Web” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_hacker). Basically it means using an electronic media, like a web blog, to communicate to a large audience base. Also here’s another blogger who gives his opinion on Winer dubbing himself a “media hacker” (http://www.seanbohan.com/?p=6). I hope this helps to understand Winer’s hacker ways 🙂

Hey Tasia! Thanks for clearing that up. I was a bit confused. I never think to use Wikipedia when looking for things like that…I guess it’s just form of habit! Anyway, thanks again.
