Summer Job

April 10, 2008

Did anyone secure a job for the summer? I am having a difficult time finding a job in my filed most of the jobs advertised for restaurants and bars (server\bartender). It is frustrating and makes me wonder if any of you (classmates) experiencing\experienced the same problem. Companies expect us to have experience so how if they do not hire us now?

This course was fun and one of few that required the use of technology (Web 2.0)

Thanks Dave and it was nice meeting you all!

I’ve found being in Coop really helps finding a job. I had 3 interviews with Coop and got 3 job offers. Funny thing is, I decided to go with a job outside of Coop (Beaton Fitzpatrick Murray), but I still think Coop helps. It’s expensive at $500 to become a member in Coop and then $500 per work term, but I think it’s worth it because you have great job opportunities that they find for you, the employers are excited to have Coop students and understand that you don’t have experience, and Coop trains you in seminars to make good resumes, give a good interview, and just generally how to act in the work environment. Besides, you make your money back because Coop guarantees a competitive wage (minimum they’ll accept is $10/hour). I know this is probably too late to help, but it’s a good option for next year.

One other comment, Kent Hudson, one of the marketing professors here has a list of company’s that are looking for business-ish employees. Like you mentioned, some of these are restaurants (like McDonald’s looking for managers) but there are some better ones in there. You should stop in and see him in room 308 on the third floor of kelly.
